Try using a lantern planter around your home this summer. You may just find that you love the results! There are so many cute lanterns at the store right now and I would like to add every single one of them to my outdoor areas. But a girl just doesn’t need that many lanterns. What to do? Start using lanterns as planters of course! Then add in your favorite flowers and you have some unique outdoor decor that will look amazing in your space.
Lantern Planter
You can use any lanterns that you love for this project. I picked mine up from Wal-Mart in the garden section. Just head to your favorite store and shop the selection for your favorites then use the instructions below to turn them into planters in minutes!
Supplies needed:
- Lanterns of your choice
- Coco liners
- Scissors
- Potting soil
- Plants
How to Make a Planter from a Lantern
Cut your coco liner to fit inside of the lantern with just a pair of scissors. The small lanterns each used a half of a liner each while the large lantern used almost two full liners. You will want to account for that when picking up your supplies. Then just line each lantern with the coco basket liner.
Once you have covered up all of the holes with your lining, just add in potting soil and any plants that you love. If you want to help the planters hold water a bit better, add a plastic bag inside of the coco liner before adding the dirt. This will keep your plants from drying out too quickly.
I must say that I love these lanterns with plants in them so much! They are the perfect accessory for my front porch! Here I have added colorful flowers but you can also add greenery instead. Whatever your style, I am sure you can find a lantern and some plants to match.
I also had to add on that white stool. I actually picked it up at Walmart as well and it makes a completely gorgeous side table on any porch.
While I was shopping, I picked up those two outdoor throw pillows as well. My porch is looking better and better! You can also click here to see how to make that rustic outdoor sign. Now, who wants to come and rock on my front porch? All that is missing is a glass of sweet tea!
For now, you can find me on the porch, admiring these lanterns used as planters and, of course, sitting in that porch rocker. I hope you will use this tutorial to turn any lanterns you find into cute planters.
